from the sketchbook

sketchbook PRACTICE...

I have decided to pick back up my sketchbook practice and put together two ways to grow my artistic skills. I will be sharing this in my stories on Instagram, follow me there @juliemstudios and here on the blog. Hope you will join and support me in this journey.

Here is what I will be doing:

1) My small sketchbook, 5×8, will be for improving my freehand drawing skills and working on creating more depth in my work. I have picked out several images for this sketchbook practice, and will be using the grid method to draw them twice. On one side will be a pencil drawing of the subject and on the opposite side will be a watercolor painting of the same subject.

2) My larger sketchbook, 7×10, will be used to practice drawing and painting scenes. I will be selecting a scene and copying the work by drawing that scene and then painting it in watercolor. I won’t be showing as much from this sketchbook since I am copying artwork to improve my own skills. I will however share occasionally here on the blog small snippets of the finished work.

Those are some progress shots of my first drawing for my sketchbook practice. I did better than I thought I would, needless to say, I’m proud of myself. I need to finish the watercolor piece but that will happen this week.

My goal is to work on a page everyday. I will mostly be sketching flowers and animals, my two favorite things to draw. This practice is meant for 30-60 minutes a day. It will hopefully be my way of loosening up for my other artwork as well. I am really enjoying it so far and look forward to keeping it up.

Let me know what you think. What is your sketchbook routine or challenge?
