How you can be like a sea turtle (and find your inner strength)

Sea turtle strength

SEA TURTLEs...

Some of the most interesting and powerful animals in the world are sea turtles. I love painting them. I love sea life so liking the sea turtle is no surprise. I am fascinated by their strength and resilience in the face of great challenges.

Sea turtles are able to thrive in some of the most difficult environments on Earth. They can live in both salt and fresh water and can travel long distances between different habitats. They are also able to tolerate a wide range of temperatures, from the icy cold of the Mid-Atlantic Bight to the warm waters of the Caribbean. In June of this year we had the opportunity to swim with them, it is was so magical!

Sea turtles are also surprisingly adaptive in their behavior. Although they spend most of their lives underwater, they must come up every few hours to breathe air. When they do come out onto land (or into shallow water), female sea turtles crawl back onto the beach where they were born. They use the position of the sun to orient themselves, which is interesting because they are unable to see while crawling back up on land.

Like sea turtles, humans have distinct behaviors that allow us to function in our environments. One of the most prevalent human behaviors is migration. People move all over the world, leaving one place for another, and using the sun as a reference point to help us get around. Other animals like geese and salmon use the sun to migrate as well; we see this in their behavior much more often than we would expect.

I also have this sea turtle available on pillows and a throw blanket. Be sure to click ‘buy here’ and check them out.

Almost all sea turtles are endangered or threatened. As an artist, I feel it is important to do what I can to protect this threatened and endangered species.

I started this out as how we can be more like a sea turtle and here are my tips for that:

  1. Remember your strength and that you are more resilient than you think.
  2. Be flexible and adaptive to your surroundings.
  3. Remember that there is room for you and your art too. Don’t become an endangered artist.
